Why I Wrote The Book

Once upon a time there lived a boy named Theodore…

“What kind of a boy?” you might ask.

“Well, he’s a happy, thoughtful, and good-natured boy,” I would reply. He’s usually first to lend a hand, and last to complain. He has a huge smile, and an even bigger heart. He’s altogether a joy to be around.

In fact, he’s a good friend of mine. We’ve known each other for years.

Though I must say, he has gotten into some sticky situations.

Not that he’s a troublemaker. Not he! But he sure does have a lot of adventures.

And Theodore has a knack—at least if not at making—at getting into trouble.

When I served as a Catholic priest, I regularly celebrated Mass and preached to the students at Royalmont Academy in Mason, Ohio. I tried to encourage them to be kind and courageous and obedient. I tried to help them see how the Gospel and the life of Jesus touches every second of their lives.

Sometimes, I found that telling a story about my friend Theodore could help the students understand part of the day’s Gospel. Theodore didn’t seem to mind that too much; all he cared about was that I got the story straight.

I usually toldl a story shortly after it happened and the facts are still fresh in my mind. As time goes by though, it’s easy to forget the details.

So when some of the Royalmont students approached and asked me to write a collection of Theodore stories, I had to ask for their help to remember the stories.

You hold in your hands some of the stories they and I remembered. May you enjoy them, and find in Theodore a good friend, one who points you to his best friend, Jesus.
